Nia is an expressive movement practice based on the joy of movement, a concept which enhances the pleasure and awareness of being in your body. Using lively, barefoot movement set to great music, your body receives the cardiovascular benefits of moderately paced movement along with increased muscle tone, strength and flexibility.
The form and freedom of the technique come from a unique fusion of movement forms. From the Martial Arts, it draws upon Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, and Aikido. This brings with it power and focus. From the Dance Arts; Jazz, Modern Dance and free-spirited Duncan Dance are blended to bring spontaneity, grace and rhythm to the movement. From the Healing Arts; Yoga, Feldenkrais, and the Alexander technique bring alignment and awareness to your body. The combination of these forms allows strength and power to be blended with graceful, fluid movement, conditioning the whole person; body, mind and spirit.
Nia is for every body! It is based on The Body's Way; a method of moving the body in accord with its specific design and function. You are encouraged to use feedback from your body, in the form of physical sensation, to modify your movement when necessary. You are always encouraged to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Furthermore all of the movements can be done at varying levels of intensity so that each student works at their own level of comfort.
